    Description

Within BWSC we have a squad for Masters swimmers. The squad continues the clubs aim of being a competitive squad and furthering the aims and abilities of its members. Masters Swimming is a worldwide sport of swimming for adults aged 25 years and over (governed by the ASA in the UK) although there is also a younger "Senior" section for 19-24 year olds. The Masters motto worldwide is, "fitness, fun and friendship".

As a group of masters we have formed a strong bond and have positive approach to swimming training and welcome new members; whether they are interested in masters swimming or improving their swimming for a multi discipline sport such as triathlon. We attend masters meets through the year and hope to give each other support and have fun.

If you are interested in joining the Masters Squad, please contact Head Coach Doug Kerr on 07833721086 or email headcoach@biggleswadesc.org.

Below is a link to the ASA British Swimming site which has a calendar of masters events around the country.

    Training Aims

We aim to include 2 key elements in the training that is

Stroke technique - we teach and train on all four strokes and also starts and turns. Training will include individual stroke correction and drills to improve technique.

Interval training - each session has a fully laid out training schedule including rest intervals and aims for each set. E.g. 5 x 50 FC max effort off 1min.

    Competitive Masters Swimming

Masters swimmers choose to compete in masters competitions, these start 25 years plus. The swimmers always swim in 5 year age bands; 19-24 year (Seniors), 25-29 years, 30-34 years and so on. There are numerous open meets, but there are also major championships such as East Regional, National, European and Worlds. Within any competition the swimmers are ranked and swim in heats by time (rather than age) and only after the event is finished the results are then given in age bands. At BWSC we aim to support and encourage those swimmers who want to compete, however there is no requirement that anyone in the masters squad has to enter competitions to be part of the squad.

    Criteria and Commitments:

All swimmers to attend 1-3 training sessions per week as set out in the training requirements. Although less emphasis on this commitment.

No competition criteria set for this squad.

Swimmers must show a good attitude to training.

    Kit:

Kick board, pull buoy, small fins, finger paddles, hand paddles, drinks bottle, spare goggles and hat.
